Sybil Ah-mane

Sybil is a highly accomplished documentary film maker specialising in the area of mental health issues.

She trained as a psychiatric nurse and continues to work in the field.

I had been training as a psychiatric nurse for two and a half years when I had my first hospital admission. I was placed on a section and was forced to stay there for two and a half months.

The following year I was admitted, again for two and a half months, but on this occasion I was placed on section three of the mental health act and diagnosed as manic-depressive.

Two years later I studied for a degree in Cultural studies where I produced an eight minute video on the subject of mental health. The project gave me the opportunity to talk about my experiences with people that could empathise.

I found the process of film making to be therapeutic and refreshing. It was at this point that the idea of Learning From Psychosis was brought to light.

Jan and I realised that we could use our experiences in a positive way by sharing our knowledge with others working in the field.

Since then I have completed an MA course in television documentary film making and produced and directed a fifteen minute film entitled 'Four Other Stories' which now forms part of the training package.

I have continued to work for Tulip mental health group as a project worker through-out my studies.
