Jan Holloway

Jan has worked in the mental health field for the last 19 years.

She is currently working in Tower Hamlets as a senior occupational therapist and has found that her experiences as a service user have enhanced and strengthened her practice.

I qualified as an occupational therapist in 1979. I was managing a day centre when I had my first experience of hearing voices; I was thirty three years old. I have had five admissions to psychiatric hospital since but have continued to work in the area of mental health.

At present I am a senior occupational therapist working in Tower Hamlets. I believe my experience as a user has enhanced and strengthened my practice.

I have always been an enthusiastic painter but since my 'illnesss' my artwork has developed in a different way. I find that I can express myself and can communicate emotionally through my art.

My work is used as a tool for learning in the package. I also facilitate an exercise on hearing voices.

My personal acccount included in the booklet will be featured in a forthcoming book 'From the Ashes of Experience'.

I have also given talks at various conferences on mental health and was chair-person for Independant Newham User Forum.
