About Learning from Psychosis

This is a refreshing and new approach to mental health training.

Instead of relying on written text, the package uses experiential exercises and visual stimuli to give participants the opportunity to actually feel what mental distress entails in a safe space.

The two trainers are both mental health workers and users and their experiences and knowledge are used as tools for learning. They leave themselves open to questions so that participants are able to gain a deeper understanding of the issues surrounding mental health needs.

The day starts at 10am and ends at 4.30pm. A booklet is given out at the end of the program which outlines the trainers' personal accounts and guidelines for future work.

The booklet is a crucial part of the package as it recognises that further work is necessary and it allows the group to reflect on the day and the autobiographical works.

Basic Aims

To increase awareness of mental health issues.

To learn about the emotional aspects of mental health distress.

To promote a deeper understanding of the subject which will improve the practice of those taking part.

To challenge existing negative attitudes towards users of mental health services.

To illustrate that there are individual differences and to enable participants to look at users as individuals.

Key Points

The training will be carried out at your venue.

The programme will begin at 10am and end at 4.30pm.

We work with groups of seven to twenty-four participants.

All you need to provide is a television and a video player.

The training package includes a fifteen minute video entitled 'Four Other Stories' and evocative art work.

Learning materials will be distributed at the end of the workshop which include both of the trainers' autobiographical accounts and guidelines for future discussions.
